Collect data
Send background
Modify data
Replicate itself to other programs
A virus can do other things also but not fixed to:
Set your computer up as a relay agent.
Set your computer email system up to spam other email accounts.
Set your computer up to falsify identity.
Your main safeguard against a virus or Trojan program is your firewall, then the anti-virus program, you should also hold a Trojan scanner program.
